Course material
Old lecture notes of the 2012 course are available here. Studying the lecture notes is sufficient to get you through the exam. However, I will not promise that I will exactly follow these notes or be bounded by them. You may want to take notes as well.
There are many books that have "mathematical model" in the title. Most of them focus on model analysis (which is useful), but they say little about how to actually formulate a mathematical model from scratch (i.e., from the behaviour of individuals to equations that describe behaviour of populations), which is the main theme of the present course. For further reading, however, here is a book that keeps a good balance between model analysis and model formulation: Edelstein-Keshet, L. 1988. "Mathematical models in biology". Birkhauser Mathematics Series, McGraw-Hill.
