Nonlinear Diffusion Problems, fall 2014
Nonlinear Diffusion Problems, fall 2014
Lecturer
Odo Diekmann
Scope
6 sp.
Type
Advanced studies
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of linear algebra, ordinary differential equations (in particular phase plane analysis) and linear partial differential
equations. A tiny bit of functional analysis.
Content
The course is concerned with spatio-temporal patterns and has multiple aims :
- provide biological motivation, explain modelling approaches, interpret mathematical results in order to obtain biological insights
- treat nonlinear diffusion problems as examples of infinite dimensional dynamical systems (discuss stability and bifurcation)
- introduce the maximum principle as a fundamental tool for scalar equations
Topics include : travelling waves, asymptotic speed of propagation, Turing patterns, gradient flows
Lectures
Weeks 44-50, Tuesday 10-12 in room B322 and Thursday 12-14 in room B321. Two hours of exercise classes per week.
Exam
by way of projects, taking the results of Exercise elaborations into account; one of the following papers can be used as a basis :
but feel free to come up with your own suggestion. In any case, please contact the lecturer in order to get to an agreement.
