Inverse problems arise in many areas including medical imaging, geophysics, nondestructive testing,
industrial process monitoring, remote sensing, and pricing financial instruments. Design and analysis
of reliable and computationally effective mathematical solution methods for inverse problems
is an active area of contemporary applied mathematics.

The summer school on computational methods for inverse problems was held at University of Helsinki,
Finland, on June 28 - July 2, 2010. The school was aimed at international graduate students
and postdoctoral researchers in the fields of mathematics, physics or engineering
with an interest towards inverse problems.

There were 50 participants representing Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Finland, Germany,
India, Italy, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, USA.

The school was part of the activity of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems Research,
and was organized in cooperation with Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis at Aalto University.

The school comprises four minicourses:

Nuutti Hyvönen (Aalto University, Finland): Factorization and source support methods for electrical impedance tomography
Abstract.

Jari Kaipio (University of Auckland, New Zealand): Bayesian framework for inverse problems
Abstract.

Barbara Kaltenbacher (University of Graz, Austria): Iterative solution methods for inverse problems
Abstract. Lecture notes: BK1,BK2,BK3,BK4,BK5,BK6

Kim Knudsen (Technical University of Denmark): D-bar methods for nonlinear inverse problems
Abstract. Lecture notes: KK1-2, KK3-4, KK5-6
