The Helsinki Summer School on Mathematical Ecology and Evolution 2022
This is the seventh school of a biennial series of international summer schools on mathematical ecology and evolution in Finland, organised by the Biomathematics Group of the University of Helsinki. The series of The Helsinki Summer School on Mathematical Ecology and Evolution is part of the EMS-ESMTB Schools in Applied Mathematics.
After the two-year break forced upon us by the pandemic, we are looking forward to continue this series in August 2022!

Time and place
The school will be held between 21 and 28 August 2022 at the Linnasmäki Congress Centre in Turku, Finland. Arrival and departure on Sundays, full program on Monday-Saturday.
The town of Turku is the oldest town of Finland with beautiful surroundings and easy access with direct flights from Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen, plus frequent trains and buses from Helsinki (direct bus connection also to the Helsinki Airport).
Participation fee
The school does not charge any registration fee. Participants must however cover their own accommodation and board, a total of 528 euros paid directly to the Linnasmäki Congress Centre upon arrival. This includes accommodation in double rooms and all meals at the Centre from dinner on 21 August to breakfast on 28 August, except for two dinners when we shall be out for the evening. We cannot provide assistance with travel costs.
The school is sponsored by the European Mathematical Society (EMS), the European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ESMTB), the Magnus Ehrnrooth Foundation, and by the University of Helsinki via its doctoral school DOMAST and its Master Program LSI.
Program
The school will be a week of high-speed, concentrated effort where most of the time is allocated to lectures. Group discussions of working papers and round-table discussions will foster informal interactions between students and lecturers. At the beginning of the school, all students will introduce themselves briefly to help people of similar interests to find one another and engage in informal discussions.
Credits
The school awards 8 ECTS credits upon examination by take-home essays submitted electronically and evaluated by the lecturers after the school.

Application
All PhD students and young researchers working in mathematical ecology can apply from all countries, especially from Europe and the Mediterranean. The school is aimed at PhD students of mathematics with interest in ecology, evolution, and epidemiology. We also welcome students of biology with sufficient background in mathematics, advanced undergraduates, and postdocs.
