An EMS-ESMTB summer school

This is the sixth school of a biennial series of international summer schools on mathematical ecology and evolution in Finland, organised by the Biomathematics Group of the University of Helsinki. The series of The Helsinki Summer School on Mathematical Ecology and Evolution is part of the EMS-ESMTB School in Applied Mathematics, and its 2018 edition celebrates the Year of Mathematical Biology.

Program

  • Karl Sigmund (University of Vienna): Evolutionary game theory
  • Odo Diekmann (Utrecht University): Renewal equations in population biology
  • Sebastian Schreiber (University of California, Davis): Coexistence in variable environments
  • Ellen Baake (University of Bielefeld): Probabilistic models and ancestral processes in population genetics
  • Mick Roberts (Massey University of New Zealand): Ecology of infectious diseases

The school will be a week of high-speed, concentrated effort where most of the time is allocated to lectures. Group discussions of working papers and round-table discussions will foster informal interactions between students and lecturers. At the beginning of the school, all students will introduce themselves briefly to help people of similar interests to find one another and engage in informal discussions.

Time and place

The school will be held between 19 and 26 August 2018 at the Linnasmäki Congress Centre in Turku, Finland. Arrival and departure on Sundays, full program on Monday-Saturday.

The town of Turku is the oldest town of Finland with beautiful surroundings and easy access with direct flights from Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen, plus frequent train and bus connections from Helsinki (direct bus also from the airport of Helsinki).

Participation fee

The school does not charge a registration fee, i.e., we cover the costs of the lecturers, premises and the Reader. Participants must however cover their own accommodation and board, a total of 516 euros paid directly to the Linnasmäki Congress Centre. This includes accommodation in double rooms and all meals at the Centre from dinner on 19 August to breakfast on 26 August, except for two dinners when we shall be out for the evening. We cannot provide assistance with the costs. Students who are members of ESMTB can apply for ESMTB travel grants.

Credits

The school awards 8 ECTS credits upon examination by take-home essays submitted electronically and evaluated by the lecturers after the school.

Organizers

Biomathematics Group, Finnish Centre of Excellence in Analysis and Dynamics Research
Director: Mats Gyllenberg, organizer: Eva Kisdi, student organizer: Sami Lehtinen

Application

All PhD students and young researchers working in mathematical ecology can apply from all countries, especially from Europe and the Mediterranean. The school is aimed at PhD students of mathematics with interest in ecology, evolution, and epidemiology. We also welcome students of biology with sufficient background in mathematics, advanced undergraduates, and postdocs. The school can accept maximum 40 students.

Applications are to be sent by email to sami.lehtinen[funny character]helsinki.fi. The application should contain
 * full contact data (name, affiliation, postal address, email address)
 * a brief CV containing prior studies and/or positions
 * a 1-paragraph description of scientific interest and motivation
 * list of publications (if any)
Please send all relevant information in one pdf file (not in the email text).

The deadline for applications is 15 February 2018 and we shall notify all applicants by 22 February 2018.

Financial support

This school is financially supported by the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and by the Academy of Finland via its Centre of Excellence in Analysis and Dynamics Research.
