The Helsinki Summer School on Mathematical Ecology and Evolution 2012


THEORY OF SPECIATION

This is the third school of a biennial series of international summer schools on mathematical ecology and evolution in Finland, organised by the Biomathematics Group of the University of Helsinki. This edition of the school focuses on the theory of speciation and is part of the ESF Research Networking Programme FroSpects and of the graduate school FICS. The series of The Helsinki Summer School on Mathematical Ecology and Evolution is part of the EMS-ESMTB School in Applied Mathematics.

Time and place

The school will be held between 19 and 26 August 2012 at the Linnasmäki Congress Centre in Turku, Finland. Arrival and departure on Sundays, full program on Monday-Saturday.

The town of Turku is the oldest town of Finland with beautiful surroundings and easy access with direct flights from Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen, plus train from Helsinki in each hour and buses every half an hour (direct bus connection also to the Helsinki Airport).

Finances

We provide full board and lodging in double rooms during the school (19 August dinner - 26 August breakfast) plus a Reader to all accepted participants free of charge, on condition of participation in the full program. Participants need to cover their own travel costs.

The School is financially supported by the ESF Research Networking Programme FroSpects, by the Finnish Doctoral Programme FICS and by the Academy of Finland via the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Analysis and Dynamics Research.

Program

The school will be a week of high-speed, concentrated effort where most of the time is allocated to lectures. Group discussions of working papers and round-table discussions will foster informal interactions between students and lecturers. At the beginning of the school, all students will introduce themselves briefly to help people of similar interests to find one another and engage in informal discussions.

The school will host a guest lecture by Prof. Anneli Hoikkala on empirical speciation research conducted at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland).

Credits

The school awards 8 ECTS credits upon examination by take-home essays submitted electronically and evaluated by the lecturers after the school.

The School is part of FroSpects and endorsed by the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and by the European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ESMTB).

Application

All PhD students and young researchers working in mathematical ecology/evolution can apply from all countries, especially from Europe and the Mediterranean. The school is aimed at PhD students of biology with sufficient theoretical background and at PhD students of mathematics with interest in ecology and evolution. We also welcome advanced undergraduates and postdocs.
