An EMS-ESMTB summer school

This is the fifth school of a biennial series of international summer schools on mathematical ecology and evolution in Finland, organised by the Biomathematics Group of the University of Helsinki. The 2016 edition of the school focuses on structured populations. The series of The Helsinki Summer School on Mathematical Ecology and Evolution is part of the EMS-ESMTB School in Applied Mathematics.

Topics and lecturers
  • Mats Gyllenberg (University of Helsinki): Dynamics of structured populations
  • Hans Metz (University of Leiden): Adaptive dynamics in structured populations
  • Reinhard Bürger (University of Vienna): Population genetics of spatially structured populations
  • Hisashi Inaba (University of Tokyo): Infectious diseases in structured populations
  • André de Roos (University of Amsterdam): Population and community ecology of ontogenetic development
Time and place

The school will be held between 21 and 28 August 2016 at the Linnasmäki Congress Centre in Turku, Finland. Arrival and departure on Sundays, full program on Monday-Saturday.

The town of Turku is the oldest town of Finland with beautiful surroundings and easy access with direct flights from Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen, plus train from Helsinki in each hour and buses every half an hour (direct bus connection also to the Helsinki Airport).

Participation fee

The school does not charge a registration fee, i.e., we cover the costs of the lecturers, premises and the Reader. Participants must however cover their own accommodation and board, a total of 473 euros paid directly to the Linnasmäki Congress Centre. This includes accommodation in double rooms and all meals at the Centre from dinner on 21 August to breakfast on 28 August (except for two dinners when we shall be out for the evening). We cannot provide assistance with travel costs.

Students who are or become members of ESMTB can apply for travel support from ESMTB. For details, see the ESMTB website http://www.esmtb.org; note the application deadline 29 February.

Program

The school will be a week of high-speed, concentrated effort where most of the time is allocated to lectures. Group discussions of working papers and round-table discussions will foster informal interactions between students and lecturers. At the beginning of the school, all students will introduce themselves briefly to help people of similar interests to find one another and engage in informal discussions.

Credits

The school awards 8 ECTS credits upon examination by take-home essays submitted electronically and evaluated by the lecturers after the school.

Organizers

The School is organised under the auspices of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Analysis and Dynamics Research by Mats Gyllenberg, Eva Kisdi and Francesca Scarabel. With questions, contact eva.kisdi [funny character] helsinki.fi.

Application

All PhD students and young researchers working in mathematical ecology can apply from all countries, especially from Europe and the Mediterranean. The school is aimed at PhD students of mathematics with interest in ecology, evolution, and epidemiology. We also welcome students of biology with sufficient background in mathematics, advanced undergraduates, and postdocs.

Application is by email to francesca.scarabel [funny character] helsinki.fi. The application should contain
 * full contact data (name, affiliation, postal address, email address, phone)
 * a brief CV containing prior studies and/or positions
 * a 1-paragraph description of scientific interest and motivation
 * list of publications (if any)
Please send all relevant information in one pdf file (not in the email text).

The school can accept maximum 40 students. The deadline for applications is 31 January 2016 and we shall notify all applicants by 15 February.
