Torstain työpajaohjelman löydät alta – tutustu ja ilmoittaudu! / Find Thursday's workshop programme below!

Työpajoista / General information about the workshops:

Osallistujien on mahdollisuus järjestää Rajapintapäivien teemaan sopivia työpajoja.

We encourage participants to arrange their own workshops related to Rajapinta's focus areas.

The organizers are in charge of the event (content, event description, hosting, and practicalities). The organizer can decide the location of the workshop. The workshop can be held virtually or offline based on the organisers’ wish. Rajapinta ry. takes part in marketing the events and can help in finding a location for them.

You are welcome to book a workshop using facilities Tieteiden talo reserved in advance – room 504 (for max 25 people) during the hours from 9:00 to 16:00.

If you are interested in arranging a workshop, please contact rajapintapaivat@rajapinta.co. Please let us know about your workshop by October 15 – the sooner you do, the more time there will be to promote it!

After the workshop-program is published, register to the workshops by sending an email directly to the workshop organisers.

Challenges of Transnational Data Gathering and Analysis

In this workshop, we aim to discuss cross-country multi-lingual data gathering and collaborative pre-analysis strategies (e.g. case of topic modelling). In particular, we explore how to work with data from different countries and political scenarios, explore methods for collecting and organising data to ensure comparability, delve into the role of topic modelling, and examine data trends over time. How can countries with diverse political landscapes, at different points in time, and with distinct democratic systems be compared?

The Endure TransAtlantic Partnership Project with the help of the University of Helsinki’s HSSH Methodological unit and the services of the CSC we have been trying to understand in constant contact to our transnational colleagues, how different societies responded to political challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly polarisation. We have been gathering data from 6 million tweets, and we have been developing a mixed methodology approach, the primary focus of data collection was on discussions about masks, lockdowns, and the role of health authorities in each country. The Finnish team in ENDURE is based at the HEPP research group at the Faculty of Social Sciences, led by Emilia Palonen, our data collaboration includes Poland, Germany and Brazil. Mateusz Karolak will join from University of Wroclaw.

We invite colleagues working on similar challenges to join discussion and share their strategies and questions. Afterwards, you are invited to engage in hands-on data analysis using Tableau.

Toolkit for Digital Methods wikithon

    • ==

TDM is a wiki site that started from the needs of researchers in the Politics and Communication Programme of the University of Helsinki. TDM is at the same time a pedagogical tool and a database for digital methods in Social Sciences. This site's goal is to help teachers and students interested in digital methods to find information on and learn about digital methods and their use.

https://wiki.helsinki.fi/display/TDM/

In this wikithon workshop we will jointly identify development ideas, missing pages and pages that need updating. No preliminary knowledge needed: you are most welcome to join with or without knowledge of digital methods - this workshop also acts as a general discussion space around them, an opportunity to learn more and ask questions. However, be also bravely prepared to get your hands dirty with some wiki editing!

Time: 14.00-16.00
