Harald Helfgott (École Normale Supérieure - Paris): The ternary Goldbach conjecture

Abstract:   The ternary Goldbach conjecture (1742) asserts that every odd number greater

than 5 can be written as the sum of three prime numbers. Following the pioneering work of

Hardy and Littlewood, Vinogradov proved (1937) that every odd number larger than a constant C

satisfies the conjecture. In the years since then, there has been a succession of results reducing C ,

but only to levels much too high for a verification by computer

up to C to be possible (C > 10^1300). (Works by Ramare and Tao have solved the

corresponding problems for six and five prime numbers instead of three.)

My recent work proves the conjecture. We will go over the main ideas in the proof.

Some classical results in these areas will be presented, but new applications and recent

Abstract:

In wireless communications the transmitted signals are prone to errors caused by fading and noise. To combat fading, so-called space-time codes can be utilized. During the past ten years, there has been a continuous race to improve the performance of MIMO space-time codes by means of algebraic number theory. In this talk, I will give an overview on the MIMO communication problem and space-time codes, and survey some results related to algebraic number theory.

Abstract: Analytic projections are central tools in the study of analytic function spaces and their operators. They often arise in optimization problems, but they can also be used in rather surprising contexts, such as in the theory of quasiconformal mappings. In this talk, we focus of the mapping properties and the norm of the Bergman projection. We review some recent progress and investigate its behavior on the conformally invariant Besov spaces. Time permitting, open problems of varying difficulty are mentioned.

Abstract:

We consider the coefficient of a nonlinear elliptic PDE as controls in order to optimize a performance criterion. Such control-in-the-coefficients problems have received a lot of attention recently. In particular, such problems appear in material optimization (meta-materials), shape and topology-optimization. The problem is particularly interesting for controls that may vanish on certain subsets of the underlying domain.

We provide existence results and we derive optimality conditions.

Jonas Tölle (Bielefeld University): Uniqueness of weighted Sobolev spaces and applications to global evolution equations

Abstract: We propose new sufficient conditions on weights $w$ which guarantee the existence of the "smooth approximation property" in the weighted Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^d,w\,dx)$, $p\in [1,\infty)$. We discuss integration by parts via logarithmic derivatives of $w$ and new global Poincar\'e inequalities. We give an example of a new class of $p$-admissible weights in the sense of Heinonen, Kilpel\"ainen and Martio. We discuss applications to global nonlinear evolution equations as well as implications for the related variational notions of solutions. Variational approximation and stability results for the equations are sketched. Singular stochastic PDEs in weighted Sobolev spaces are presented briefly.

Abstract:

The mathematical theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos was founded by J. P. Kahane in 1985. This theory has numerous applications in mathematical physics: 2d Liouville quantum gravity in the conformal gauge (boundary and non boundary Liouville measure, KPZ equation), the Kolmogorov-Obukhov model of energy dissipation in 3d turbulence, the maximum of log-correlated fields, etc... In this talk, we will first review the theory and discuss numerous extensions and related topics that have been developed the past few years. We will then focus more specifically on complex Gaussian multiplicative chaos, an extension of Gaussian multiplicative chaos to the complex case.
