Local disks

LMU does not back up local disks and mostly they don't have any redundancy. That makes them dangerous for data storage. LMU moves data wich is older than 6 months from local disks to L:\lmu_archive disk, if local disk looks full.

3D Workstation and LS Workstation

These workstations have meant to deal with big datasets and 3D data processing, analysis and visualisation. For this purpose they have a 10Gbit network connection. The fast connection means you should not have a need to store the files locally unless you are actively working with them. Because fast local disk is quite limited we have to put some more exact limitations on local files on 3D and LS workstation:

  • D-disk on 3D workstation and Turbodrive on LS workstation are very fast temporary storage space. Older files than 1 month may be transferred either to slower local disk or to lmu_archive network disk.
  • Data which is older than 6 months will be moved from local disks to lmu_archive network disk when necessary.
  • A user should never have more than 1TB data on local disks combined if they are not logged in the workstation. If there is more data it is moved to lmu_archive network disk. This is to ensure that people with big data can do their analysis.

If there is not enough local disk space to make your analysis, please contact lmu-staff@helsinki.fi.
