About the method wiki

In 2013 the Teachers’ Academics working on the Viikki campus organized a competition to find ideas to develop teaching and learning on the Viikki campus, and that would benefit most (if not all) of Viikki campus. One large theme in the competition was the better use of electronic learning materials and platforms, such as making videos on laboratory techniques to ease laboratory courses. From there an idea of a method database or wiki was developed.

This method wiki contains a collection of useful method related electronic learning materials and links from basic lab tutorials to research methods, material found on the internet produced by various parties  as well as materials produced in Viikki. Anyone (logged in with a University of Helsinki user name) can add material or links they find useful to the wiki. The method wiki is meant for both teachers to support teaching and students for independent studies and revision.

The Method wiki was built with the Teachers’ Academy’s support. Read more about the Teachers’ Academy.

User rights

Anyone can view most of the material on the method wiki. The videos of Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) only work in the University’s network. The library has rights to the sections General, Neuroscience & Immunology and Infection.

Commenting, editing, and adding pages is possible only when logged in with a University of Helsinki user name. To comment or to add content, log in using the button in the upper right corner. Deleting pages and comments is possible only to the administrators. If you want something removed, contact the admins or comment the page in question. You are able to remove your own comments if no one has replied to them.

About copyrights

Linking content to the wiki is always allowed (embedding videos from Youtube creates a link, not a copy - don’t copy material that is not yours), it’s allowed to link stuff on your learning materials, moodle pages etc. but to show videos in your classroom you’d need the copyright’s holder’s permission. Materials licensed with Creative Commons can be used in teaching - mentioning the author, of course. (Content licensed with a Creative Commons license is tagged with a cc(linkki) label). The method wiki admins hold no copyrights of the materials linked.

More information on copyright issues can be found here: CopyrightCopyright issues .

Tips for navigating the wiki

  • There is a search bar on the front page. The page tree will also help you navigate in the wiki.

  • Using labels helps navigating the wiki. Each page has labels added to it, and you can easily add more (by clicking on the pencil icon next to the labels on the lower right hand corner). By clicking on the label you’ll see a list of all the pages tagged with the same label.

  • The method wiki is currently mostly in Finnish, but many pages contain at least some material in English. Those are tagged with the label in-english.

  • All the labels used in the wiki in alphabetical order:

Following pages and notifications about changes

You can follow any page you are allowed to view when logged in. You will be notified (by e-mail) when the page is edited, commented, an attachment is added or the page is deleted. You can follow a page by clicking “Watch” on the upper right hand corner.

It’s also possible to choose ”Autowatch” from your e-mail settings (from the upper right hand corner your picture - settings - e-mail settings) that notifies you automatically about all the changes made on pages you’ve created, edited or commented on.

More information about following pages and e-mail notifications on the Confluence help page (or in Finnish here: Muutosten, ilmoitusten ja tehtävien hallinta)

Other

Is there something essential missing from the method wiki? A method, topic, a great link or a video you made that could be useful to others as well? Add it! In technical matters you can contact Viikki’s e-learning experts (contact details, see Verkko-opetuksen tukihenkilöt).
