A copyist is a person who is making a copy by hand of a document. Since the copy is handwritten, a copyist can also be referred to as s scribe. In some cases, the scribe was the producer of the original document, and in these cases, the scribe cannot be seen as a copyist. This applies to many charters and letters in which the scribe often identified himself or herself at the end of the document.
See the entry scribe for a fuller discussion.
