Alberto Varvaro (2010, 191; cf. Trovato 2014, 132) introduced a distinction between simultaneous and successive contamination, or contamination of readings and exemplars respectively. The former is an instance of contamination that happens when a scribe uses more than one exemplar to copy his text from and chooses between variants. Cf. successive contamination.
