Aalto - Scientific Computing in Practice (SCIP)

Science-IT continues with the Scientific Computing in Practice (SCIP)
courses. Here is a tentative plan for the upcoming fall/winter. Spring
courses to be announced later.

Fall 2018 / Winter 2019 courses, tentative plan: Linux Shell basics
(2x3h), GPU computing (4x3h), Condor introduction (2x2h), Matlab Basics
(4x3h), Triton winter kickstart (1x4h in Jan)

Right now (sorry for short announcement) we will start with the Linux
Shell Basics. It is a spin-off from the last spring Linux Shell
Programming. Dedicated to Linux terminal practicalities only at very
introductory level, mostly for those new to Linux users that want to
know what is behind the command line. No scripting, just working with
files, processes, running shell utilities etc. We need this as a ground
state for many other Triton courses.

Right after the Shell course, we jump to GPU computing. It's where you
meet the GPU cards and practical aspects of their usage on Triton
including code compilation and CUDA programming.

FAKTAA TIETOSUOJASTA HY:LLÄ – TERVETULOA INFOTILAISUUTEEN 1.11.2018

Tietotekniikkakeskus järjestää kolmannen ja viimeisen infotilaisuuden tietosuojasta 1.11. klo 12.30-16.00 Minerva-torilla.

Tilaisuudessa avataan mm. rekisteröityjen oikeuksia tietojärjestelmissä ja kerrotaan, miten keskitetty lokitus helpottaa tietojärjestelmän vastuuhenkilön työtä. Tilaisuudessa käydään myös läpi HY:n tietoturvaohjeistuksen tilannetta ja niitä käytännön palveluita, joita tietotekniikkakeskus tarjoaa tietojärjestelmien vastuuhenkilöille.

Tarkempi ohjelma julkaistaan syyskuun aikana Flamman tapahtumakalenterissa, ilmoittaudu ennen 24.10. Henkassa.

Infotilaisuus on tarkoitettu erityisesti tietojärjestelmien omistajille ja pääkäyttäjille, mutta myös muut asiasta kiinnostuneet yliopistolaiset ovat tervetulleita!

24.9.2018 klo 15 Using Edge Computing for Privacy in Real-Time Video Analytics

Welcome to the next lecture of the new high level lecture series on Monday 24 September, 2018 at 3:00 pm at Small Hall, Main Building, University of Helsinki, Fabianinkatu 33, Helsinki

Helsinki Distinguished Lecture Series on Future Information Technology (https://www.hiit.fi/HelsinkiITLectures) continues with an invited lecture from Mahadev Satyanarayanan (Carnegie Mellon University), entitled

Using Edge Computing for Privacy in Real-Time Video Analytics

Abstract

Live video offers several advantages relative to other sensing modalities. It is flexible and open-ended: new image and video processing algorithms can extract new information from existing video streams. It offers high resolution, wide coverage, and low cost relative to other sensing modalities. Its passive nature means that a participant does not have to wear a special device, install an app, or do anything special. He or she merely has to be visible to a camera.  Privacy is clearly a major concern with video in public spaces.

In this talk, I will describe how Edge Computing can be used to denature live video thereby making it "safe" from a privacy point of view.

Using OpenFace, our new open-source face recognition system that approaches state-of-the-art accuracy,   we are able to selectively obscure faces according to user-specified policies at full frame rate.   This enables privacy management for live video analytics while providing a secure approach for handling retrospective policy exceptions.

About the speaker

Satya's multi-decade research career has focused on the challenges of performance, scalability, availability and trust in information systems that reach from the cloud to the mobile edge of the Internet.  In the course of this work, he has pioneered many advances in distributed systems, mobile computing, pervasive computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Most recently, his seminal 2009 publication “The Case for VM-based Cloudlets in Mobile Computing” and the ensuring research has  led to the emergence of Edge Computing (also known as "Fog Computing").  Satya is the Carnegie Group Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.  He received the PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon, after Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He is a Fellow of the ACM and the IEEE.  For a more detailed bio, see Satya's Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahadev_Satyanarayanan.

The lecture will be followed by cocktails.

The event is free of charge and open to all interested in the leading research in information technology. Please register at https://elomake.helsinki.fi/lomakkeet/91504/lomake.html. Please register asap and latest by Monday 17th September.

The lecture series will continue. See details from https://www.hiit.fi/HelsinkiITLectures.
