CSC Summer School celebrates its 10th anniversary by bringing together
undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in
different disciplines of scientific computing. The school consists of
lectures and hands-on training on parallel programming, code
optimization and other essential skills in development of scientific
software. During the school you can build up your HPC expertise from
almost zero up to an intermediate / semi-advanced level.

The aim of the school is to give you the skill set necessary to start
writing high-performance scientific software! ... and to have a great
time while doing it!

This course addresses hybrid programming by combining OpenMP and MPI, as
well as more advanced topics in MPI. Also, parallel I/O is discussed and
exemplified in the course. This free of charge course is provided by the

HELDIG Forum continues on Wednesday 27.2.2019 at 10:15 with a talk by Dr. Chiara Bonacchi, Lecturer in Heritage, from University of Stirling. The session takes place in in Metsätalo Hall 4 (stairs up from the lounge, on the left). The topic of Chiara's presentation is:

"The 'Dark Age' of Celtic Paganism: Using big data to study foundation myths in Italian neo-populist discourse"

Abstract:

"This lecture examines the neo-nationalist tendencies expressed at the time of the March 2018 General Election held in Italy, and thereafter. For example, it considers how the Northern League has abandoned links to heritages that were previously very strong, in order to revamp its identity and move from a focus on exclusivity at regional level to one at national level. It has ceased identifying with ‘reimagined’ free and pagan Celts that used to be presented as the antithesis of the corrupted and domineering Rome. The League has left these symbols and mentions of the past in the background, side-lining them also visually in its flag. According to the party line, it is now a Catholic Italian culture that needs to be defended against forms of religious and cultural ‘otherness’, especially Islamic ones. This shift is accompanied by the loss of prominence of other local and secessionist movements such as Liga Veneta, built on medieval heritage inspired by the ‘greatness’ of the Maritime Republic of Venice. The talk draws on Twitter and Facebook data extracted and analysed as part of Ancient Identities in Modern Britain, a large and collaborative research project funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (http://ancientidentities.org). Findings will be published in a monograph on Heritage and Nationalism: Using Big Data to Deconstruct Populist Narratives (under contract with UCL Press)."

Eduskuntavaalit lähestyvät. Tiede- ja koulutuspolitiikka, ilmastonmuutos, kaupungistuminen ja kestävä kehitys ovat takuuvarmoja vaaliteemoja. Ja juuri näistä kumpulalaisten on syytä olla kuulolla!

Matemaattis-luonnontieteellinen tiedekunta ja Matlu ry järjestävät vaalikeskustelun maanantaina 11.2. kello 16:00-18.00 Kumpulan kampuksella (sali A111, Exactum-rakennus, Pietari Kalmin katu 5).

Keskusteluun on kutsuttu mukaan seitsemän gallupeissa suurinta puoluetta. Tilaisuus on avoin kaikille kiinnostuneille, ja paikalle kutsutaan opiskelijamme, henkilökuntamme ja alumnimme. Tilaisuuden kieli on pääosin suomi, mutta kysymme myös ainakin yhden kysymyksen ruotsiksi ja yhden englanniksi.

Tilaisuuden juontavat kaksi opiskelijoiden edustajaa.

Content Explorer: Recommending Novel Entities for a Document Writer

Abstract: 
Background research is an essential part of document writing. Search engines are great for retrieving information once we know what to look for. However, the bigger challenge is often identifying topics for further research. Automated tools could help significantly in this discovery process and increase the productivity of the writer. In this paper, we formulate the problem of recommending topics to a writer. We consider this as a supervised learning problem and run a user study to validate this approach. We propose an evaluation metric and perform an empirical comparison of state-of-the-art models for extreme multi-label classification on a large data set. We demonstrate how a simple modification of the crossentropy loss function leads to improved results of the deep learning models.

Hei sinä projektin omistaja- ja ohjausryhmävalmennukseen osallistunut!

Yliopiston omat projektivalmennukset jatkuvat keväällä 2019, jolloin luvassa on valmennuksia niin omistajille ja ohjausryhmien jäsenille kuin projektipäälliköille ja projektiryhmäläisillekin. Koulutuksissa on vielä hyvin tilaa.

Toivoisinkin apuasi tiedon välittämisessä oikeille henkilöille.

Projektinhallinnan perusvalmennus 1

Helmikuun alussa alkava Projektinhallinnan perusvalmennus 1 (oman projektin työstäminen) on tarkoitettu projekteissa parhaillaan työskenteleville projektipäälliköille tai projektiryhmien jäsenille.

Koulutus koostuu kolmesta lähitapaamisesta ja näiden välisistä etäjaksoista, joiden aikana osallistujat pääsevät soveltamaan koulutuksessa oppimaansa suoraan omaan projektiinsa yhdessä muun projektiryhmän kanssa.

Jos omissa projekteissasi on projektipäälliköitä tai projektiryhmäläisiä, jotka haluaisivat vahvistaa omaa projektinhallinnan osaamistaan, vinkkaa toki heille tästä mahdollisuudesta! Ilmoittautuminen päättyy 31.1.

Syksyllä järjestetyt koulutuksemme saivat erinomaisen vastaanoton (yleisarvosana 4,8/5), ja kevään koulutusta on entisestään kehitetty saadun palautteen pohjalta. Syksyn koulutuksiin osallistuneet kommentoivat palautteessaan tärkeimpiä koulutuksesta saamiaan oppeja muun muassa seuraavasti:

”Sain hyvän kokonaiskuvan projektinhallinnasta ja paljon hyviä työkaluja.”

”Riskinhallintasuunnitelma auttoi projektin tehtävien priorisoinnissa. Koko koulutus auttoi hahmottamaan projektissa tärkeitä asioita ja kiinnittämään huomiota olennaiseen. Lisäksi sain miljoona pientä käytännön neuvoa ja vinkkiä konkreettisiin työtehtävissä vastaan tuleviin ongelmiin.”

”Monet asiat olivat todella tärkeitä: roolit, projektisuunnitelma, riskianalyysi, sidosryhmäanalyysi ja viestintä. Näistä kaikkein tärkein lienee kuitenkin roolit. Jos ne ovat epäselvät, mikään ei toimi.”

”Harjoitus erilaisista viestintätavoista oli todella valaiseva, ja antaa ehdottomasti apuvälineitä ihmisten kanssa kommunikointiin.”

Projektin omistaja- ja ohjausryhmävalmennukset

Myös projektin omistajille ja ohjausryhmien jäsenille tarkoitetut koulutukset jatkuvat keväällä. Näidenkin koulutusten sisältöjä ja koulutuksen kulkua on kehitetty teiltä osallistujilta saamamme arvokkaan palautteen pohjalta.

Jos pidit koulutusta hyödyllisenä, vinkkaa siitä toki kollegoillesi, jotka eivät ehkä vielä ole koulutuksessa käyneet! Helmikuussa järjestettävä koulutus on jo täynnä, mutta huhtikuun ja kesäkuun toteutuksissa on hyvin tilaa.
