Code of conduct for fundamental courses

These rules apply to at least the following courses (lectured in Finnish)

REGISTRATION TO  COURSES

•  registration to all courses via Sisu
  
  • Sisu registration closes before the course starts. It is important to register in time so that we can book adequate lecture halls and form sensible exercise groups

COURSE WWW PAGES

•  we recommend that all course web pages are placed into Moodle
  • Teacher: make sure that anyone is able to  see the course webpages as a guest without  having a university user ID (if copyright issues do not prevent this)

LECTURES

• we recommend a break in 90 min  lectures
  

EXERCISES

• exercises returned after deadline will not yield points. If getting to the department for the deadline is a problem, we recommend returning exercises electronically, this is allowed on all courses
• marking range of exercise questions: 0,1,2
  • 0  no effort or senseless attempt
  • 1 good attempt
  • 2  contains essentially correct physical and mathematical principles, but does not need to be spotlessly correct
•  the  department will organise a training session for all assistants at the beginning of every autumn term

COURSE EXAMS

• you can have one-sided handwritten A4 memo sheet and a calculator without internet connection in the exam, tabel book or coursebook - check the practice of your course from the course page  
  
  • memo sheet will be returned with the exam paper at the end of the exam
•  marking range of exams questions
  
  • basic principles the same as  in exercises:  focus on physical principles and reasoning
  • violation of physical principles or inconsistencies are penalised, even if they occur in ' extra' material after an essentially correct answer
  • lecturers and assistants plan the marking scheme together when constructing the exam questions
• language of the exam:
  • a Swedish-speaking student can ask the exam questions related to a Finnsh-speaking course both in Swedish and in Finnish
  • if the course language is Swedish , the exams question will be in Swedish. A Finnish speaking student can choose to answer either in Finnish or in Swedish
  • if a student is aiming for a bilingual degree (Finnish/Swedish tai Swedish/Finnish)they should answer exam questions using the course language
    
    

• replacement course exam who those who are absent from the actual course exam

  within half a year of the actual exam in a departmental exam where you can take an examination of the course in question

  • inform the lecturer before the actual exam if you are not able to attend
  • you can bring a memo sheet and a calculator just like in the actual course exam 

• due to dyslexia and other similar conditions (certificate needed) student is allowed to use an extra hour to complete the exam

  student must notify the lectures well in advance so that a supervisor can be arranged for the extra hour

• lecturer can use  alternative methods to ensure the students have learned the material of the course (for example home exam, essay

  •  all students on the course should be treated similarly. Only in the case of medical reasons can a student get special treatment. If the student is in need of aids or an extra room where to take the exam please contact specialneeds@helsinki.fi 

GRADING

• 
  

  • course exam yields 2/3 of points and exercises yield 1/3

    • no threshold, you can pass with 0 exercise points, but some courses have a minimum exercise point amount or a minimum to the exampoints
    • no bonuspoints: if you get  35%  exercises solved you get 0.35x1/3  of course points;  if you get 100% exercises solved, you get 1/3 course points
  •  the lectures can in exceptional cases scale up points for questions that have clearly been badly formulated

• Grade limits

  • < 45 %  rejected
  • 45-55 % grade 1/5
  • 55-65 % grade 2/5
  • 65-75 % grade 3/5
  • 75-85 % grade 4/5
  • > 85 % grade 5/5
    
    
  • At the end of the course the grades should be listed according to student numbers, and also the grade distribution of should be given. If several teachers have participated grading, you should list the names of all these teachers and also which question each of them have graded.

GENERAL EXAMS

• a student who has not passed a certain course, can attempt to pass the course once and only once in a departmental exam, irrespective of whether she/he has attended the course or not
  
  • if a student has attended the course, but wants to disregard exercise points due to their low amount, this is allowed, and their grade will be bases only on the exam. This however uses the one chance for taking the departmental exam for this course. 
  • if a student attends a replacement course exam (in which case also exercise points are taken into account when grading the course), they still have one chance for passing the course in the departmental exam  (with no exercise point taken into account)
• a student who has passed a course can attempt to rise the grade twice in a departmental exam
• if you don't pass/rise your grade in the departmental exam, the only option to achieve this is to attend the course
  
•  you can bring the handwritten memo sheet and calculator also to the departmental exams (except MAPU, KvaPer*, SuPer*,*calculator allowed, memo sheet not)
• due to dyslexia and other similar conditions (certificate needed) student is allowed to use an extra hour to complete the exam

  • student must notify specialneeds@helsinki.fi well in advance so that a supervisor can be arranged for the extra hour

EXAM ANSWER STORAGE PROCEDURE

• Original exam answer papers are stored by the lecturer for at least six months. During this time students can go and have a look at their exam papers and take copies of them at their own expense After the six months period, students have posiibility for a two month period to fetch their original exam answers. After this period the papers will be destroyed.

CHEATING/PLAGIARISM

• we encourage student to work on the exercises together, and thus similarities in the exercise solutions are not considered plagiarism or cheating
  
  •  solutions in your own handwriting are considered plagiarism only if it is obvious that the only aim was to get exercise points without any attempt to understand what is going on
  •  it is not acceptable to return a photocopy or a scan of  somebody else's solutions or model solutions from previous years
•  if you cheat by returning copied exercise solutions or laboratory reports you will be addressed by the lecturer, and if the clear misconduct continues, by the professor responsible for the curriculum in your subject, who keep a record of these cases

STUDENTS WHO DON'T SPEAK FINNISH OR SWEDISH

•   as every student now has the right to try to pass each course once in a departmental exam,  non-Finnish/Swedish speakers do not need special permission for this
