Remote teaching devices for the spring term 2021 – some instructions

After sending instructions below, we have gotten additional tips and feedback from teaching staff:

  • Using a tablet (e.g. iPad), drawing with a touch pen or finger on Zoom's own whiteboard has been noticed to be reltively easy.
  • A good alternative for a pen tablet is a document camera, using which it is possible to write more easily on a piece of A4 paper in landscape. Unfortunately the faculty doesn't have these devices, but if you can afford one, a good alternative is e.g. some camera by HUE.

Tässä ohjeita etäopetusvälineiden hankkimisesta ja palauttamisesta:

Varastossa olevat laitteet

Tiedekunnalla on opetushenkilökuntaa varten seuraavia laitteita:

  • One by Wacom -piirtopöytä (medium)
  • Lenovo M8 -tablet
  • HyperCm HD -webkamera
  • Voxicon HD -webkamera
  • Sennheiser headset (analog)
  • Logitech H111 headset (analog)
  • Steelplay HP-41 headset (analog)
  • Gembird-pöytämikrofoni (analog)
  • Scout-pöytämikrofoni (usb)
  • Kodak-tripodteline kännykälle

Piirtopöydät

Suosittelemme opetusta varten One by Wacom -piirtopöytiä, joiden avulla esimerkiksi kaavojen kirjoittaminen käsin onnistuu kohtuullisen vaivattomasti. Jotkut ovat käyttäneet piirtopöytää esimerkiksi Miro Whiteboardin kanssa. Linuxilla (Ubuntu 20) myös Xournal-ohjelman on havaittu toimineen piirtopöydän kanssa hyvin.

(Lenovo M8 -tabletti soveltuu myös piirtämiseen, mutta siinä ei ole omaa piirtokynää, eikä piirtojälki ole erityisen hyvä.)

Henkilökunnan koneissa (Lenovo ThinkPad, Cubbli 18) sekä uudemmissa fuksiläppäreissä (vuodelta 2018 ja uudemmat) One by Wacom -piirtopöytä on testattu ja sen pitäisi toimia suoraan. Kuitenkin ainakin joissain fuksiläppäreissä vuodelta 2018 on havaittu yhteensopivuusongelmia piirtopöydän kanssa. Jos yhteensopivuusongelmia ilmenee, voi käyttöjärjestelmäpäivitys Cubbli 20:een olla tarpeen. Ks. IT-tuen ohjeet ja ole yhteydessä tukeen päivitystä varten.

Jos kyseessä on vanhempi fuksikone (HP EliteBook), joka on saatu vuonna 2017 tai aiemmin ja jossa on vanhempi Cubbli Linux -versio, tulee tehdä seuraavat päivitykset (nämä käyttäjä pystyy itse tekemään):

Tarvittaessa lähituki asentaa tuoreemman Cubbli 20 -käyttöjärjestelmän HP-koneeseen. Sovi päivityksestä lähettämällä sähköpostia (helpdesk@helsinki.fi) tai soittamalla tukeen. Lähituki päivystää numerossa 02941 44411 arkisin klo 9-15. Ota huomioon, että käyttäjän pitää tallentaa kaikki data ennen päivityksen tekemistä. 

Mistä laitteita saa?

Jos kevätlukukaudella opettavalla opettajalla tai assarilla on jo olemassa tiedekunnan laite, sitä ei tarvitse palauttaa, vaan samaa laitetta saa käyttää niin kauan kuin opetus jatkuu.

Suosittelemme, että kurssien vastuuopettajat koordinoivat kurssin assareille tarvittavat laitteet. Ensisijaisesti kannattaa kysyä assareiden tarvetta uusille laitteille (heillä saattaa olla valmiiksi tiedekunnan laitteita tai omia laitteita, joita he käyttävät mieluummin). Laitteita voi mahdollisuuksien mukaan kysellä kollegoilta ja kierrättää kurssilta toiselle. Jos laitteita ei ole saatavilla, uusista laitteista tehdään laitepyyntö Helpdeskin kautta (helpdesk@helsinki.fi). Pyynnössä tulee määritellä, mitä kurssia varten laitteet tarvitaan, kenelle ne tulevat (nimi ja sähköposti) ja kuka on kurssin vastuuhenkilö.

Laitteiden palautus

Kun laitetta ei enää tarvita, se palautetaan lähituelle. Luennoitsija voi kerätä laitteet kurssinsa assareilta ja toimittaa ne lähitukeen.

Palautus onnistuu vahtimestarien kautta (esim. Chemicumin vaksikopille ma-pe klo 7.45-18.00) tai suoraan lähituelle (Exactumin toinen kerros, heti vahtimestarin kopin yläpuolella, huoneet A216 ja A220-A223, arkisin klo 9-15).

Devices in stock

The Faculty has the following items for teaching staff:

Pen tablets

We recommend One by Wacom pen tablets for teaching. With a tablet, it is relatively easy to draw equations by hand etc. Some teachers have used pen tablet together with Miro Whiteboard. In Linux (Ubuntu 20) also Xournal application has proved to be easy to use with a pen tablet.

(Lenovo M8 tablet is also suitable for drawing but it doesn't come with a tailored touch pen and drawing quality is not very good.)

In the staff computers (Lenovo ThinkPad, Cubbli 18) and in a newer "fuksiläppäri", i.e. undergraduate laptop, (gotten in 2018 or newer), One by Wacom pen tablet has been tested and should work without problems. However, with some undergraduate laptops from year 2018, there have been some compatibility problems. If you encountered such problems, update to Cubbli 20 might come into question. See the instructions by IT support and contact them for the update.

If a Wacom tablet is used with an older undergraduate laptop  (HP EliteBook), gotten in 2017 or earlier, and running on an older Cubbli Linux version, you need to do the following updates (the user can do these themselves):

If needed, IT support will install a newer Cubbli 20 to an HP laptop. You may agree with IT support on installation by email (helpdesk@helsinki.fi) or calling them on number 02941 44411 Mon-Fri at 9-15. Note that before installation, user needs to backup all their data.

Where will I get devices?

If a teacher or an assistant who teaches on the spring term already has a device from the faculty, they can continue using it as long as they are teaching. 

We recommend that lecturers coordinate that assistants on their course have the devices they need. Primarily, you should ask assistants if they need new devices (they might already have a device from the faculty or their own device that they prefer to use). You may ask if your colleagues have free devices and circulate devices from a course to another course. If there are no devices available, you can request new devices from Helpdesk (helpdesk@helsinki.fi). Please state in the request the course, assistant's name and email, and the person in charge of the course.

Returning devices

Once the device is not needed anymore, it should be returned to the IT support. The lecturer may collect the devices from their course's assistants and return them to the IT support.

You can return the devices to janitors (e.g. in Chemicum, Mon-Fri at 7.45-18.00) or directly to the IT personnel (the second floor of Exactum, above janitor's cubicle, offices A216 and A220-A223, Mon-Fri at 9-15).
