The tool was developed for Luomus Genomic resources collection needs. The problem was that when users entering data on genomic resource collection samples use Excel import sheet for data entry, they should always check on Kotka whether a certain specimen already has samples related to it and what is the next free sample ID. To help with this, the ID generation tool was created. To use the tool:

  1. Fill in your regular import sheet as usual, make it otherwise ready for import but leave column MYGathering[0][MYUnit][0][MFSample][0][subject] empty for sample IDs to be generated there.
  2. If you also want to generate Additional Sample IDs from a sequence, fill in the header of the number sequence to the column MYGathering[0][MYUnit][0][MFSample][0][MFAdditionalIDs][0], but leave the number empty (Eg. "Luomus vertebrate tissue number:")
  3. Go to the tool in Kotka: from Tools, choose Generate IDs to Excel. Browse for the file and click autofill. This may take a while if you have a large excel file.
  4. Out comes an Excel file which should have stayed otherwise the same as it was before giving it for the tool, but have SampleIDs and possible additional sample IDs generated.
