Target group
EMOS module is intended for students of University of Helsinki and other universities in Finland and elsewhere who aim to graduate in statistics at Faculty of Social Sciences of the UH.
Value added for student
By specializing in EMOS as a part of Master studies, student will be certified competent to work as survey statistician and in related positions in national and international contexts, including National Statistical Institutes and the European Statistical System of the European Commission (Eurostat) and the European Central Bank (ECB), as well as public and private sector institutions (e.g. banking, insurance and survey industry).
Description
The objective of EMOS studies is to educate statisticians specialized in survey statistics and methodological areas of official statistics. Studies are organized as an EMOS module structured within the parent study programme “Master Studies in Statistics”. The parent programme qualifies for doctoral studies.
The EMOS module consists of studies required to award the EMOS certificate and studies required for Master's degree in statistics at the University of Helsinki. The degree of 120 ECTS contains at least 85 ECTS in statistics (including 40 ECTS for Master Thesis project) and at most 35 ECTS for elective studies (e.g. additional courses in statistics or elective courses in mathematics, computer sciences, or subject matter disciplines).

Master Thesis Project
The preparation of Master's thesis is organized as a joint project with the university and a partner institute. Currently, the most important partner is Statistics Finland. The actors in the thesis project are student, scientific supervisor of the university and subject-matter supervisor of the partner institute, as described below.

Background
The study programme "Master Studies in Statistics" of University of Helsinki has been awarded the European Master in Official Statistics (EMOS) Label by the European Statistical System Committee (ESSC) of the European Commission in 2015. The UH is the only EMOS certified university in Finland. There are 12 such universities in Europe, see at:
