The University of Helsinki's server maintenance enables the deployment of Windows and Linux virtual servers as described in the  Server administration service.

Ordering of virtual servers

The virtual server is commissioned with a self-service tool https://onify.it.helsinki.fi/

NB! If you do not need root permissions and you can run your app as a container solution, you should familiarise yourself with the container platform.

To order a virtual server, the following information is required:

  1. Server owners' usernames or group name
  2. Invoicing unit and WBS
  3. Access rights
    1. Normal usernames
    2. Admin/sudo rights
      1. NB! As a rule, main user rights are not assigned to regular user accounts.
      2. A separate user account that is not used for other logins must be requested for the main user rights.

  4. Operating system (RedHat, Windows or Ubuntu)
    1. The RedHat operating system is recommended for Java/JS applications.
  5. Name of the server
    1. Name refers to the year of deployment (for example, server-20.it.helsinki.fi)
  6. Alias name (cname)
    1. For example skynet.helsinki.fi
  7. Role of the server: Is the server dev, test or production server
  8. Server lifespan in months
    1. NB! The EOL version of the operating system determines the end of the EOL, it cannot be set longer
  9. The server description and purpose of use in detail. You can also describe the settings and preferences pertaining to the server.
  10. Number of CPU cores
  11. Central Memory (RAM)
  12. Storage details
    1. Type and size of the operating system disk
    2. Size of Additional data disks
  13. Firewall rules
  14. Bigsister monitoring
