Short Course: Panel surveys in social and economic research and the treatment of nonresponse, spring 2011

Prof. Rendtel teaches Applied Statistics at the Economic Department of the Freie Universität Berlin. He worked for 9 years in the German Socioeconomic Panel (SOEP) project, a household panel survey started in 1984. He collaborated with Statistics Finland in an evaluation project of the Finnish subsample of the European Community Household Panel (ECHP). His recent research is on the longitudinal use of the German Micro Census, a rotating panel survey.

Type

Advanced studies. The orientation is applied.

The course is intended to fit to studies in quantitative methods for post-graduate (doctoral) students in social and behavioral sciences and economics. The course also can be taken as advanced studies in statistics for students in statistics and mathematics.

Lectures (16 hours) are given at Unioninkatu 37 SH 1 (1st floor):
Thursday 17.2. at 14-16
Monday 21.2. at 9-13
Tuesday 22.2. at 9-12
Wednesday 23.2. at 9-12
Thursday 24.2. at 12-16

PC training

An option is offered for practical training with the methods introduced in the lectures.
The training sessions will be helpful for completing the practical work.

Dates are Tuesday 1 March and Wednesday 2 March, at 15-18.
PC class: SSKH IT-sal (Snellmaninkatu 12, 1st floor).

Exam

Course contents

The course will give an overview under four aspects: (a) Study design of panel surveys, (b) Some substantive considerations on the special nature of
non-response in panel survey, (c) The methodological approaches to treat with nonresponse in panel surveys, (d) Empirical examples from the above mentioned surveys.
