Environmental and ecological modelling and inference
The projects in this theme examine environmental data, and help us describe and explain how environmental processes function. The fact that the data are measured in the natural world (rather than, say, a laboratory) creates challenges for the analysis and interpretation of the data: the way in which the data are sampled is important, as is the inherent messiness of the data, due to the many sources of variation that act on it. The projects here are all focussed on dealing with this messiness: describing the aspects that are important to the system under study, whilst accounting for the effects of those aspects that are not relevant, or are artifacts of the way the data has been collected.
