The burned site is 0.81 ha, 300 - 500 m (MAP) south from the SMEAR II-station. In the site there was a mature spruce dominated stand with the stem volume per hectare about 400 m3.  The stand was clearcut during the 6th and 7th of February 2009 and burned between 08:45 and 11:00 20090626. During the clearcut the merchantable stem wood was collected from the site, but all the slash (tree tops and branches) was left on the site.

Pre measurements:

Measurements during the burning:

  • An airplane measuring aerosols, gases and meteo during the burn
  • A snooper car driving nearby forest roads and measuring aerolsols and gases (Helsinki Metropolia)
  • People walking around the area with portable aerosol particle counters
  • All normal SMEAR II-measurements
  • Meteo on the site (Finnish Meteorological Institute, San Jose State University)
  • Soil temperatures

Measurements after the burning

  • Amount of organic material in the stand (slash, surface vegetation and soil organic layer)
  • Soil greenhouse gas fluxes
  • Soil temperature and moisture
