Rottasniitunsuo

Brief description

Rottasniitunsuo is a freshly rewetted peatland forest located in Tammela, Finland (60° 41'43.5"N 23° 59'05.7"E). The formerly mostly open or sparsely treed mire was thoroughly drained for forestry in the 1960–70’s, although some parts had been ditched already earlier, probably in the 1930–40’s. Eddy covariance measurements of CO₂ started in July 2022, complemented with CH₄ from May 2023 onwards. Other continuous measurements include air and soil meteorology as well as microclimate temperature and soil moisture measurements around the site. Manual chamber measurements of CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O fluxes on different surfaces have been carried out since 2022. The tree species include Scots pine, Norway spruce and downy birch with several field layer vegetation types. The rewetting started in Feb 2024 with the thinning of the central pine stand to approximately half of its volume. Ditch blocking was done in October 2024, after which the water table has raised considerably. The 30-year mean annual temperature in the area is 5.2 °C and mean annual precipitation 621 mm (1991–2020).
