9. Course learning outcomes

Descriptive oceanography aims at describing and explaining how and why the ocean physical system works. It forms a necessary empirical knowledge for all oceanographers. The course contains oceanographic data analysis and principles of hydrography and circulation as the fundaments. A general scheme for a large scale basins in the upper and lower hemisphere with equatorial systems in between are presented. Then the topography of the sea floor follows. Then the hydrography and circulation of the oceans are presented: Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean and Arctic Ocean. A few selected mediterranean and marginal seas such as the Baltic Sea, Barents Sea, North Sea and Meditttanean Sea are gone through at the end.

At least 1/3 of the exercises must be completed and a seminar talk needs to be given. Exam at the end. Grading 1-5.
