9. Course learning outcomes

Aim of the course is to familiarize students to the basic concepts of modern particle physics and learn the most fundamental calculational techniques. This will lay the foundation for more in-depth studies of Quantum Chromodynamics, Electroweak theory and Higgs physics in follow-up courses.


10. Course completion methods

- contact teaching: lectures, theory exercises (25%) and experimental analysis (25%)

 - exam (50%)

 - minimum of 45% required to pass



11. Prerequisites

Student is expected to be comfortable with special relativity and classical quantum mechanics and have taken an introduction modern physics and structure of matter. For the experimental analysis, student should be familiar with Python or another similar programming language.

  • Underlying concepts [special relativity, quantum mechanics]
  • Decay rates and cross sections [Lorentz-invariance, matrix element]
  • The Dirac equation [relativistic QM => spin + antimatter]
  • Interaction by particle exchange [Feynman diagrams]
  • Electron-positron annihilation [calculations in perturbation theory]
  • Electron-proton elastic scattering [form factor]
