[ˈaɪɡn̩fe:la]
An Eigenfehler (German for "(a witness's) own mistake") is an error or a variant in a text's tradition that occurs only in one witness – or possibly in witnesses from several places in the stemma independently – and can therefore be eliminated in the search of the archetypal text. Cf. eliminatio lectionum singularium.
