9. Course learning outcomes

The course gives you an overview of atmospheric wave motions and quasi-geostrophic theory.

10. Course completion methods

The course has weekly lectures and exercises. Attendance is not obligatory but recommended.

To complete the course, you need to get a sufficient total number of points from the exams and exercises.

11. Prerequisites

Thermodynamic and hydrodynamic basic laws governing the behavior of the atmosphere (e.g. from the BSc level courses FYS2032 Atmospheric thermodynamics and FYS2033 Introduction to Atmospheric flow dynamics).

Elementary vector operations. Derivation and integration.  Solving of linear differential equations with constant coefficients. Scale analysis. Basics of Fourier analysis.

13. Course content

Basics of wave motion: phase and group speed, Hovmöller diagram, perturbation method

Different types of waves: sound waves, shallow water gravity waves, internal gravity waves inertia-gravity waves, Rossby waves

Inertial instability

Geostrophic adjustment

Observed time mean conditions and synoptic-scale variability in the mid-latitude atmosphere

Quasi-geostrophic vorticity equation, omega equation and height tendency equation

Structure of developing baroclinic waves

Grading is based on the exam (75%) and exercises (25%). 45% of total maximum points is required for grade 1/5. 85% of total maximum points is required for grade 5/5.
