The course is recommended after taking the Basic Observational Astronomy and Fundamental Astronomy courses.

Prerequisite for taking the course is a participation in the IRAF course.

-The course may be offered in the autumn semester. IRAF course starts in teaching period I, the busy week of the course is scheduled in period II, the reports are returned in period III.

9. Course learning outcomes

 

Participants of the course will learn about preparation, conduction and data reduction of modern astronomical observations. They will participate in the forefront research projects on stellar evolution, galaxy evolution and cosmology and contribute to obtaining the new measurements.

10. Course completion methods

 

The main part of the course is 1 week intense field course, located at Tuorla Observatory with courses on preparation of observations, astronomical instruments. The practical work consists of remote observations using the 2.6m Nordic Optical Telescope. The course work includes presentations of the results and the course report, based on which the grade will be issued.


11. Prerequisites

The course is recommended after taking the Basic Observational Astronomy and Fundamental Astronomy courses.

Prerequisite for taking the course is a participation in the IRAF course.

Instrumentation of Nordic Optical Telescope

Visibility studies, observational conditions and planning the observational run

Telescope control system 

Preparation of the observing run: choosing exposures, filters, grisms for the science goals

Calibration observations

Target acquisition

Performance spectroscopic and imaging observations at optical and near infrared.

Data reduction and visualization

Performing the scientific experiment: planing, conducting, adjusting, reporting
