Twin study at University of Helsinki

The twin study at Helsinki University began in 1974, when the Older cohort studies were started. Later also Finntwin16 and Finntwin12 studies have been initiated. The follow-up study has been proceeded to this day with three baseline projects. Several studies have also been completed to some smaller cohorts. Currently we are cooperating with many Finnish and foreign researchers.

More than 600 articles from the study have been published in international journals. Additionally some 90 doctoral theses have been completed. Financial support is provided by University of Helsinki, Academy of Finland and National Institutes of Health. Some smaller fellowships have been received from many Finnish and foreign foundations. We also have cooperation with International Society for Twin Studies.

Prof. Jaakko Kaprio and Prof. Markku Koskenvuoxx§ have lead the study since the 1980s. Professor Koskenvuo has retired in June 2013.  Most of the staff and all facilities are located at University of Helsinki.
