Effects of Interplanetary Shocks on the Lunar Wake

While orbiting the Moon and crossing the lunar wake every 25-28 hours, ARTEMIS encounter the solar wind ~70% of each lunar month and provide the data with sample rates of 4 Hz for the magnetic field and 0.25 Hz for plasma moments during fast survey mode, and that arise from two spacecraft with separation ranging from ~5x102 to 5x104km (~0.08 – 7.8 Re), providing a unique opportunity for investigating the solar wind interaction with the lunar wake as well as the interplanetary shock effects on the wake. As a plasma void, the lunar wake is characterized with a low plasma density, high temperature and magnetic field strength, which has been confirmed by simulations and observations in the past decades. However, it is unclear how shocks self-reconstruct after being interrupted by an obstacle, and what are the effects of interplanetary shocks on the lunar wake. ARTEMIS data show that when shocks pass the Moon and the lunar wake, the planar shock waves are ruptured. Part of shock signatures eliminated at a close distance behind the Moon (such as at X = -2 Rmoon), but resumed at large distance (such as at X = -7 Rmoon). The magnetic field in the wake is significantly enhanced, which may be attributed to the enhanced diamagnetic current due to the shock compression and the accumulated compressional waves effect inside the wake. The preliminary 3-D hybrid simulations show that the shock first compresses the wake and then expands into the wake while propagating anti-sunward.
