Baltic-Nordic-Ukrainian Network on Survey Statistics
The aim of the Network is long-term co-operation on education and research in survey statistics by exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas. Efforts are made to strengthen contacts between university teachers, students, researchers and practitioners, between academic institutions and national statistical agencies. The Network also tries to promote interest among students and to motivate them to choose their professional career as survey statistician.
Sample surveys are essential tools in a modern society to provide accurate information to politicians, businesses and the general public about living conditions and opinions. The creation and development of teaching and research capacity in universities is crucial for the establishment of good survey practice in government agencies and other sectors of the society.
University teachers in transition countries have the potential to learn new methodology based on scientific theory much easier and better than employees in public administration who were trained for other tasks during their university studies, sometimes long ago. The university training of new students and subsequent recruitment of them by public and private employers can most effectively transfer new knowledge to good practice in the society. Continued contact with such former students now working with statistical surveys in the public and private sectors is also an essential feature of the activities of the Network.
The target groups of planned activities are therefore four:
- university teachers in statistics who want to learn and teach survey statistics and to become specialists in this field,
- university students taking courses in survey statistics and writing project and examination papers in this field,
- research students who want to specialize in survey statistics on the Master or Ph.D. level,
- former students trained in survey statistics who are employed in statistical agencies or other public or private places of work.
