Queer Students' Association OVI

Who?

The name of our organization, Opiskelijavinokkaat, is Finnish for queer students, so basically we're a heterogeneous group of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans students. But we are known to have even a few straight people in our meetings! Our organization works in the good care of the University of Helsinki, but our members come from a variety of educational establishments, including the highly esteemed School of Life. OVI is also a member of SETA, the Finnish national human rights organization working for legal equality and social justice for glbt-people.

What?

Weekly meetings at our charming club room constitute the core of our activities. The evenings are spent socializing over a cup of tea and biscuits. Sometimes we have a special theme or topic: for example, we talked about (trans)gender issues, fetishisms, and the literature of Tennessee Williams, spent an evening cooking (vegan) food, listened to music, played cards and had parliamentary candidates in an election panel. A couple of Tuesdays per semester we usually watch videos.

Where & when?

Meetings are usually at Uusi Ylioppilastalo, Mannerheimintie 5 B, 7th floor. Everybody is welcome to join us every Tuesday night at 6 o'clock. See the event calendar below for more detailed information.
