Applications

The graduate students in the Graduate School are provided travel support for participation in intensive courses, summer/winter schools and conferences in Finland and abroad; please contact the director for details. Organizers may apply for partial financial support from the Graduate School for the organization of research training events within Finland related to the research areas covered by the school.

For doctoral student positions funded by the Ministry of Education, the next application round is expected to take place in October 2012.


Past announcement: open doctoral student positions (October 2011)

The Finnish National Graduate School in Mathematics and its Applications invites applications for at least four (4) doctoral student positions.

The fixed-period appointments will commence on January 1, 2012 (or later) and the length of the appointments will be up to four years.

The doctoral student positions are intended for full-time study and research leading to a doctoral degree in an area covered by the Graduate School. The doctoral student will, in addition to research for the doctoral thesis, participate in teaching and other duties at the relevant department.

Successful applicants to be elected for the doctoral student positions are expected to have completed a Master's degree (or equivalent) by the end of 2011 and to have an approved research plan. Successful applicants are in addition expected to have demonstrated ability and motivation for postgraduate studies and for completing the doctoral degree in accordance with the study and research plans. The doctoral student positions are intended for work in one of the units belonging to the Graduate School and applicants are expected to apply to be supervised by a particular teacher (or teachers) from the Graduate School. (See Departments and supervisors.) The contract of employment will be signed with the university in which the doctoral student is working.

Salary will be paid according to levels 1-4 of the university salary scale for teaching and research personnel, in addition to which the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

Applications should be addressed to the Board of the Graduate School, and are required to contain the following attachments:

  • a research plan for the doctoral thesis, including a tentative schedule for completion of the thesis
  • curriculum vitae
  • two (2) letters of recommendation, which may also be sent by e-mail directly to the Director of the Graduate School
  • other relevant documentation (such as copies of publications or preprints of the applicant).

Written applications containing the required attachments should reach the Graduate School before 3:45 pm on Friday, October 21, 2011. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
