This is the home of the Urban Semiotics - a grand attempt for the unification of the hard and soft sciences with an eloquent mixture of pragmatic touch and multidisciplinary theorising

STRUCTURE OF THE ESSAY:

Title: How the city mediates? Affordances and signs in digital and spatial environments

  • Abstract: well... the abstract
  • Introduction: introduction to the subject and our viewpoint. Theoretical background & our purposes.
    • Theoretical background: Affordances by Gibson and by Norman. Signs by Peirce. Distributed and embodied cognition views (?). Cities as complex and changin environments(?). Cities in general and why they are interesting(?).
    • Purposes of this study: Explore the role of affordances and signs in the mediation of urban spatial and digital environments.
  • Perception and categorization of urban spatial environments: perception and categorization in general(?)(C); urban environments in general (S&C) shannonian, semantic and pragmatic geoinformation (C); cognitive maps (C); kinetic field model (S)
  • Perception and categorization of urban digital environments:
  • Affordances and signs in urban environments: Achieving urban environments through these concepts in the light of the previous chapters. Defining these concepts in a new light that fits urban environments better (what was presented in lectures, own thoughts)
  • Case study (if time allows):
    • Material & Methods: Analysing urban structure based on theory. Comparing the result to the analysis of a web page. Do we choose a certain area, e.g. some public space. ???
    • Results: hypotheses: Cities primarily mediate semantic information through spatial features, so in order for digital content to be effective in this sense, it must be spatially encoded.
  • Discussion/conclusion:  The creation and features of our urban representations, and the role of affordances and signs in the process. Emphasis is put in to the comparative analysis of affordances and signs in spatial vs. digital environments.

    3. Socializing an Entire City

Creator of Cbusr Matt Martindale discussed his idea behind developing a social networking site geared towards a specific geographic region. He created Cbusr after moving to Columbus from New York City and found it difficult to meet new people. This tool is similar in some ways to Facebook and LinkedIn, but is geared towards networking and meeting people within your own city. As social networking brings us all closer, there is something to be said about being able to meet those you’re connecting with in person and focused locally.

This social networking site offers more real life interactions and Meetups.
