Continuing education in IL for libraries and information specialists

TiinaH: I've participated in number of workshops and courses dealing with pedagogical issues and I find it very important: you meet people who 'struggle' with similar issues in your daily work, you get inspiration, and it's also lovely be a participant -somebody has arranged everything, and you just participate .

I work at the National Library of Health Sciences in Helsinki; at my library we have a close co-operation with EAHIL. We arranged last summer EAHIL2008, and I was working in the group for Continuing Education courses. There were many subjects, but I want to lift one of them here: Minna Lakkala: Progressive Inquiry Learning. It's very interesting to know more about the learning process. The reverse side in organising courses is that you cannot participate in all you would like to, because you need to take care of the practical issues .

Like you I find it really useful to meet both librarians / academics / teachers to discuss pedagogy, common issues and how to design effective activities.  I try to encourage colleagues to attend courses aimed both at teachers and librarians as I feel you get different things from both types of courses.  If you attend a course with a variety of participants you gain the realisation that everyone can experience difficulties in controlling the class, setting good learning outcomes etc., so it is not just an issue for librarians.  Also non-librarians can sometimes come up with really good activities for us to then use.  Courses with just librarians means you can talk pedagogy without having to first discuss and agree what IL is.  And sometimes I think we are more comfortable with peers from the library world.

The CILIP CSG Information Literacy Group are creating an online tutorial that aims to be a first stage in developing teaching skills for librarians.  You can find the beginnings of it at http://courses.informationliteracy.org.uk/course/view.php?id=13  The guest account is:

We shall be formally piloting it from the 2nd November 2009.
